The centerpiece of the entire festival is the $500,000 guaranteed $570 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event. This tournament has shown incredible growth over the past few years under the guidance of Golden Nugget Director of Poker Operations Andy Rich. In 2016 the tournament drew 1,520 total entries to build a $760,000 prize pool, with eventual champion Darrell Smith taking home $109,605 after striking a deal heads-up. In 2017 the turnout grew by over 33 percent, with 2,025 total players creating a final prize pool of $1,012,500. With the guarantee more than doubled, the eventual champion Sacha Mendelsohn earned $113,859 after outlasting the gigantic field.
This year, the four-day main event takes place from June 28 – July 1 and features three starting flights, each beginning at 11 a.m. local time. Players begin with 25,000 in starting chips, with 40-minute blind levels that increase to 60-minute levels at the final table. During each starting flight late registration and unlimited re-entries will be available until the start of the 13th level.
While the main event is the marquee tournament of the series, the GPS has something for every player, with a fantastic balance of guaranteed no-limit hold’em events and 18 mixed-game and non-hold’em tournaments, including Omaha eight-or-better, no-limit deuce-to-seven single draw, pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better and Big O, H.O.R.S.E., and much more.
There are many reasons why the Golden Nugget Grand Poker Series has grown in popularity in recent years. With an incredible schedule of events, a fantastic venue that formerly played host to popular poker TV shows like High Stakes Poker, and with seasoned Tournament Directors Kurt Dau and Jordan Cutter overseeing the series, the GPS has drawn larger crowds each and every year.

In 2015 the series drew 7,525 total entries, which nearly doubled to 14,137 entries in 2016. Just a year later 23,968 entries were recorded. Only time will tell how big the 2018 turnout will be, but there are certainly plenty of highlights to entice players to make the trip down to Fremont Street.
Here is a look at a few of the other key events to look out for:
• $20,000 guaranteed $150 buy-in events starting at 1 p.m. almost every day throughout June.
• $150,000 guaranteed $150 buy-in event on May 31 through June 2. Last years the event featured only six flights and drew a record-setting field of 2,563 entrants, creating a prize pool of over $281,000. This year three additional flights have been added.
• Two $250,000 guaranteed “Ultimate Re-Entry” $200 buy-in events June 7-9, and June 21- 23.
• Bar Poker Open returning June 11-14.
• Four Seniors events, including a $1,000 buy-in high roller event. The $100,000 guaranteed $250 buy-in Seniors event kicks off at 10 a.m. on June 16.
• A multitude of Mixed Game Tournaments at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. with buy-ins ranging from $250 to $570.
• $5,000 guaranteed $110 buy-in events nightly at 7 p.m. throughout June.

One of the under-the-radar summer poker gems released its schedule.
The Golden Nugget Grand Poker Series is set to run May 29 through July 3 this year. It will feature the usual assortment of daily and nightly events that typically populate the GPS schedule, as well as the ever-popular $570 Main Event which will once again carry a $500K guarantee and feature three starting days — June 29-30 this year, with the finale on July 1.
The past couple of years, the Grand Poker Series Main Event has drawn over 1,500 players (2016) and 2,000 players (2017), awarding over $100,000 to the winner each year despite deals being made in both cases. Five players banked north of $60,000 last year.
The recreational-heavy fields and low buy-ins make the Golden Nugget's tournaments a popular attraction for players with shorter bankrolls looking for softer events. The location on Fremont Street also provides a chance to get away from the main strip and experience a different part of Las Vegas.
